188 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS, [Jan. 29,
The petition of J. Pleasant Bartholow, asking to be placed
on the pension list.
Which were severally read and referred to the Committee
on Pensions.
Also,
The petition of John J. Stuart & Co., asking payment for
articles furnished State Tobacco Warehouse No. 2.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Claims.
Mr. Jamart presented the petition of John Showacre, and
eveoty-six other citizens, asking the abolishing of coopering
in the Penitentiary.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Manu-
factures.
Mr. Stone presented the petition of James R. Hopewell,
asking for compensation as screwman in Tobacco Warehouse
No. 5.
Which was read and referred to the Select Committee on
that subject.
Mr. Whitson submitted the following order :
Ordered, That Messrs. Newcomer and. Ardinger be ex-
cused from attendance this day.
Which was adopted.
Mr. Kirk submitted the following order :
Ordered, That the Comptroller be directed to furnish this
House with the petitions of J. M.Walker and Richard Sewell,
-Jr., with certain papers filed in said Comptroller's office.
Which was adopted.
Mr. Linthicum submitted the following order :
Ordered, That it be entered upon the Journal that Mr.
Polk is detained at home by sickness.
Which was adopted.
Mr. McCosker submitted the following order:
Ordered, That the Committee on the Ohesapeake Bay and
its Tributaries be instructed to inquire into the cause of the
destruction of the ice-boats Chesapeake and Maryland by fire,
and if the destruction of said boats waa caused by negli
gence on the part of the officers having them in charge.
Which was adopted.
