Mr. Claggett presented a petition, agains empowering the County Board of School Commissioners to appoint school teachers for Washington county. Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa- tion. Also, Six petitions, against the passage of a law authorizing the town authorities of Hagerstown to make an appropriation for certain water works. Which was read and referred to the Committee already ap- pointed upon that subject. On motion by Mr. Wilson, Leave was granted to the Committee on Finance to report a, bill, to refund to Samuel B. Hance, Charles Claggett, Frederick Sasscer, and Sarah G. Herbert, monies erroneously paid by them as State taxes on Bank stock, into the Treasury of Maryland. Senate bill, entitled an Act to repeal section 47, Article XVIII. of the Code of Public General Laws, entitled " Clerks of Courts," and to re-enact the same with amendments, Was read the third time and passed by yeas and nays, as follows: AFFIRMATIVE. Messrs. President, Miller, , Biake, . Stephenson, Compton, Spates, Carroll, Sell man, Crawford, Spencer, Denson, Steiner, Earle, Timmons, Fields, Wilson, Longwell, Williams—18. NEGATIVE—None.
