Said bill was then sent to the House of Delegates.
On motion by Mr. Carroll,
The Senate proceeded to the consideration of the order of
the day,
Being the message submitted by Mr. Timmons, on Feb-
ruary 2nd, in response to House message in relation to the
disaster to the Ice Boats Chesapeake and Maryland,
When Mr. Carroll submitted the following amendment to
.the message :
BY THE SENATE,
February 6th, 1873.
'Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :
We have received your message proposing the appointment
of a Joint Special Committee of three from the House and
two from the Senate, to enquire into the cause of the disaster
to the ice boats Chesapeake and Maryland, and non-concur
therein.
We recommend that the Governor be authorized to unite
"with the city authorities in offering a reward on the part of the
State of one thousand dollars for the detection and convic-
tion of any persons who may have committed acts of incen-
diarism which produced the late disaster.
By order,
AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,
Secretary.
Mr. Timmons submitted the following amendment to the
amendment:
Strike out all after the words "non-concur therein," and
insert the following : "But propose, with the concurrence of
your Honorable Body, the appointment of a Joint Special Com-
mittee of five, two on the part of the Senate and three on
the part of House, to inquire into the cause of the disaster
to the ice boats Chesapeake and Maryland, said Committee
to hold its sessions at the Seat of Government, and have
authority to send for persons and papers..
Which was determined in the negative. '
The question then recurring upon the amendment proposed
by Mr. Carroll,
On motion by Mr. Stephenson,
The yeas and nays were called, and the amendment was
Adopted as follows:
