So it appears that no person received a majority of the
votes cast in the Senate.
The Joint Resolutions in relation to W. W- Corcoran vs.
the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal then coming up,
On motion by Mr. Stephenson,
Further consideration of said resolutions was postponed,
until Thursday at 1 o'clock.
The Clerk of the House of Delegates delivered the follow-
ing messages:
BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,
January 12, 1872.
Gentlemen of the Senate:
We have received your message, proposing a Joint Com-
mittee, of five members on the part of the Senate, and three
on the part of the House, to bring the subject of a Ship Canal
across the peninsula of Maryland and Delaware, to connect
the waters of the Chesapeake and Delaware bays, before the
Executive of the General Government, or, in their discretion,
before the proper Committee of the Congress of the United
States, and to ask a detail from the Topographical Engineer
Corps, to have the route of said Canal surveyed, &c.
We have appointed on the part of the House, Messrs,
Groome, Stone, and Chaisty.

By THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,
January 15, 1872.
Gentlemen of the Senate:
We have received your message, requesting the appoint-
ment of a Joint Committee, to consist of five members, on
the part of the Senate, one to be selected from each of the
present Congressional Districts of the State, and five mem-
bers on the part of the House of Delegates, to be selected in
like manner, to report a bill to divide the State into six Con-
gressional Districts, so as to provide for a proper representa-
tion in the House of Representatives of the United States,
under the National Census of 1870, and respectfully concur
therein.
The Committee on the part of the House will be hereafter
appointed.
