The Committee appointed by the joint action of your Hon-
orable Bodies to inform me officially of my election as Trea-
surer of Maryland, performed that duty by handing me the
enclosed complimentary note, which I desire shall be read to
your Honorable Bodies.

SIR :—The very agreeable duty has been assigned us by
the General Assembly of Maryland, of notifying you, official-
ly, of your election as Treasurer of the State, for the ensuing
term of two years, after your qualification.
Allow us to congratulate you upon this merited mark of
respect and distinction conferred by the representatives of
your fellow citizens, and at the same time to express our satis-
faction that the management of the monetary affairs of our
State has been confided to such good and competent hands.

RESPONSE OF MR. MERRYMAN.
Messrs Chairman, and
Gentlemen of the Committee:
In returning my thanks for the kind terms in which you
have been pleased to convey to me, the official intelligence of
my election to the State Treasurer, permit me to say that I
bring to the performance of the duties of the office no feeling
of the partisan and no purpose of hostility to any interest of
this State. It will be my endeavor to discharge the duties
devolving upon me with the sole view of promoting the pros-
perity of all the great works of our mother State, so that
every section may reap equally the blessings and benefits
which follow the progressive spirit of public improvements.
I consider it the duty of the Board of Public Works to foster
