sideration thereof they be allowed, seven dollars per diem
from the commencement of the session.

On the question being put,
It was determined in the negative.

The hour of midnight having arrived, the President of the
Senate arose and said:

SENATORS :—We have reached the terminus of the session
as prescribed by our Constitution. The duty devolves upon
me as your presiding officer, so to declare. Privileges and
duties, pleasures and labors in connection therewith are
"among the things that were." Anepoch in our lives, a
crisis in that of our State, history will preserve its future
existence, and when we shall cease to feel or be affected by
its consequences, and shall have been forgotten, others will
sit in judgment upon the record we have made, and declare
by their verdict "whether it be good or whether it be evil."
Several subjects of unusual interest and importance have
occupied our attention, and. to the extent of our authority
have been settled. Diversity of opinion, stimulated by the
earnestness of conviction; has lent to our deliberations and
debates, at times, a degree of energy and indeed of excite-
ment hardly to be anticipated in a body composed, as ours ;
but, with the conclusion of each controversy, have passed
away the shocks and shadows incident thereto, and the har-
monizing effects of mutual respect and a common purpose
have preserved intact the bonds of our political brotherhood.

May I not indulge the hope that personal good will and
esteem prevail on all sides. For myself, as your presiding
officer, I can say, I have endeavored faithfully to discharge
my duties and impartially to administer my office. For your
kindness and forbearance at all times I am deeply indebted,
and beg to assure you I shall not cease to remember both.

I carry with me from this Chamber no unpleasant reflec-
tions in connection with my associations here (personal or
official) with members or officers of this Senate. I should be
more pained to think I had given cause for such to a single
individual connected with the body; and if in an unguarded
