1870.] OF THE SENATE. 617

CUMBERLAND, March 26, 1870.
To the Honorable the Senate of Maryland :

GENTLEMEN—Your order of the 25th instant has just been
received, and without having the books of the Canal Com-
pany before me, I hasten to respond and give you the in-
formation desired from such notes and memoranda as I have
now in my possession.

There was in the treasury of the Canal Company
and its depositories on the 9th December, 1869,
the sum of........................................... $209,981.64

Arid there was received in the month of March... 200,00

Making a total then on hand and since rec'd of $210,181.64

There was paid to Virginia 9th Dec. $58,435.00

Deposited with Brown & Bro.,in Dec.

1869....................................... 75,000.00

Expended for repairs, officers' sala-

- ries, &c.................................. '24,274.72

Expended for repairs, officers' sala-
ries, &c., inv January................ 20,183.40

Expended for repairs, officers' sala-
ries, &c., in February............... 27,477.57

Expended for repairs, officers' sala-
ries, &c., in March................... 150.00

$205,520.69

Leaving balance now in the treasury of............ 4,660.95

By deducting from sum on hand 9th Dec., viz :. 209,981.64
The sum appropriated to pay debts, viz : ......... 166,000.00

It leaves the balance in the treasury of............ 49,981.64

(which was retained to meet current expenses.)
To which add the sum of.............................. 21,904.05

Difference between $101,565, balance of appro-
priation of $160,000.00, after paying $58,435
to Virginiaf, and $79,660.95 reported as paid
on the 22d, and the sum of $200.00 received in
March, and you have ............................ $72,085.69

The whole of this latter sum, as above shown, was expend-
ed in repairs and pay of officers and other employees of the
Company, during the months of December, January, Feb-
ruary and March.

It appears, therefore, that if the whole of the sum of $160,-
000.00 had been paid out, the Company would have been
short the sum of $16,243.00 to meet its'current expenses
until the opening of navigation in the spring.
