added thereto by the Apt of 1868, chapter 87. Which was read the first time, and referred to the Senators
from Frederick, Talbot and Baltimore counties. On motion by Mr. Spates, Leave was granted to the Senators from Allegany, How-
ard and Worcester counties, to report a bill to authorize the
Mayor and Council of Cumberland, to close Janes' Alley in
said city. On motion by Mr. Malone, it was Ordered, That 500 copies of the reply of the Attorney Gen-
eral of Maryland to the order of the Senate, upon the subject
of the payment of $58,000 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
Company to the Commonwealth of Virginia, be printed and

The Senate of Maryland: GENTLEMEN:—I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt
of a copy of your order of yesterday, "that the Attorney
General of Maryland be requested and. directed, to investi-
gate the circumstances under which the sum of $58,000, or
more, was recently paid by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
Company, to the State of Virginia, and give his opinion, in
writing, as to whether the said payment was or not an ille-
gal misapplication of the funds of the said Company, and a
violation of the rights of this State as mortgagee of the reve-
nues of said Company, and report to the Senate at an early
day."
