Which was read, assented to, and sent to the House of
Delegates.

On motion by Mr. Malone, it was

Ordered, That the Attorney General of the State of Mary-
land, be requested and directed to investigate the circum-
stances under which the sum of $58,000 or .more, was re-
cently paid by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company to
the State of Virginia, and give bis opinion in writing as to
whether the said payment was or not an illegal misapplica-
tion of the funds of the said Company, and a violation of the
rights of this State as mortgagee of the revenues of said Com-
pany, and report to the Senate at an early day. The Secretary
is hereby directed to send a copy of this order to the Attor-
ney General.

The Clerk of the House of Delegates returned the follow-
ing Senate bills:

A bill entitled an Act to enable the Mayor and City Coun-
cil of Baltimore to subscribe to the stock of the Valley Bail-
road Company to the amount of one million dollars.

Endorsed, " By the House of Delegates, March 3, 1870,
reported favorably from a Select Committee, read a second
time, two-thirds of all the members elected having voted in
the affirmative, under provision of section 27, of Article 3,
of the Constitution, read a third time and passed by yeas and
nays."

A bill entitled an Act to add a new section to the Code
of Public Local Laws for Cecil county, under the title of
"Schools" for the purpose apportioning the Academic Fund
of said county among the several Academies thereof,

Endorsed, "Passed by yeas and nays."

A bill entitled an Act supplemental to, and to amend an
Act entitled an Act to incorporate the Maryland Agricul-
tural and Mechanical Association, passed March 19, 1867,

Endorsed "Passed by yeas and nays."

Mr. Welch, from the Committee on Corporations, to whom
was referred House bill entitled an Act to repeal the Act of
incorporation of Mechanicstown, Frederick county, passed
February 13 1832, chapter ill, and the supplements thereto,
and sections 193 to 212. both inclusive, of Article 11, of the
Code of Public Local Laws, and to substitute in lieu of said
Acts and sections incorporating the village of Mechanicstown
in said county, reported it without amendment.

Said bill was then read the second time.
Mr. Welch, from 'the same Committee to whom was referred
