of Baltimore city, entitled the Commonwealth of Virginia vs.
the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company, and for other pur-
poses, &c.,
Endorsed, 'Passed by yeas and nays." The President laid before the Senate a communication from
the Clerk to the County Commissioners of Prince Georges'
county, in response to an order of the Senate, enclosing the
amount of taxes derived from mortgages assessed in said
county for the year 1869. Which was read and referred to the Committee on Finance.
Mr. Earle tendered his resignation as Chairman of the
Committee on Finance.
By unanimous consent, Mr. Earle was permitted to explain his reasons for tender-
ing his resignation. Mr. Snyder submitted the following order : Ordered, That the Senate have heard with deep regret,
that the Hon. James T. Earle, Chairman of the Committee
on Finance, has tendered his resignation of that position, the
duties of which he has for several years past discharged with
such signal ability, and to the entire satisfaction of this
Body, therefore be it further ordered; That the Senate are unwilling to
dispense with the usefulness of the honorable gentleman,
and appreciating, as they do, the invaluable services render-
ed by him, and being fully convinced that no reflection upon
the character and efficiency of the Chairman of the Commit-
tee on Finance was intended by any member of this Senate,
most respectfully decline to accept his resignation, and
express the hope that he will continue in the discharge of
the duties of Chairman of the Committee on Finance.
On the question being put, It was determined in the affirmative Jay yeas and nays, as
