On motion, by Mr. Clarke,

The Honorable Eli J. Henkle, of Anne Arundel County,
was called, to the Chair, and having assumed the same ad-
dressed the Senators present,

On motion by Mr. Hyland,

The Senators elect took and subscribed the oath prescrib-
ed by the Constitution.

On motion by Mr. Snyder, it was

Ordered, That when the Senate adjourns, it stands ad-
journed until to-morrow at 12 M.

On motion by Mr. Hyland,
The Senate adjourned.

THURSDAY, January 6, 1870.
The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.
Prayer by the Rev. Mr. Henderson.
Present at the call of the roll the following Senators :

Messrs. Biggs, Browne, Carroll, Clarke, Compton. Den-
son, Earle, Fields, Grove, Henkle, Henry, Hyland, Jump,
Kimmel, Maddox, Malone, Miller, Parker, Sellman, Snyder,
Spates, Stephenson, Timmons, Welch, Wilson—24.

Hon. Wm. Kimmel, Senator from the first Legislative Dis-
trict of Baltimore City, and the Hon. Nathan Browne, the
Senator from Carroll County, appeared in the Senate Chamber
and. took their seats.

On motion by Mr. Earle,

The Hon. Barnes Compton, of Charles county, was declared
unanimously elected President of the Senate.

Mr. Compton was then conducted to the Chair by Senators
Earle and Snyder, when he delivered the following address :

Permit me, Senators, before occupying the Chair to which
your generous confidence has assigned, me, to express to you
my unfeigned thanks. I must rely upon your forbearance in
the performance of its varied, duties and obligations, and ap-
peal to you now for your assistance and support, assured that
this appeal will at all times be promptly and cordially re-
sponded to. However well versed an individual may be in
the theory and principles of parliamentary law, practice—
