MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION

The Motor Vehicle Division repairs, maintains,
and makes disposition of the motor vehicles of the
State Police. The Division also prepares and main-
tains equipment specifications and standards of per-
formance for the motor vehicle fleet.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT DIVISION

The Personnel Management Division maintains
personnel records for the State Police. The Division
includes the Recruiting Section; the Applicant Records
Unit; the Medical Records and Service Section; and
the Promotional Standards and Development Unit.

SUPPLY DIVISION

The Supply Division procures materials, sup-
plies, equipment, and services needed to operate
the State Police. Within the Division, the Agency
Property Unit controls the storage and disposition
of property held by the State Police.

TRAINING DIVISION

The Training Division administers all State Police
training programs, including curricula development
and entry-level in-service and specialized training.

SPECIAL OPERATIONS BUREAU

The Special Operations Bureau was organized by
1985. The Bureau provides specialized investigations,
specific industry regulations, and certain statewide law
enforcement support. The Bureau oversees six divi-
sions: Automotive Safety Enforcement; Aviation;
Crime Laboratory; Criminal Investigation; Executive
Protection; and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. A
unit investigating matters relating to the Department's
Division of Correction also is under the Bureau.

AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY ENFORCEMENT
DIVISION

Established in 1977, the Automotive Safety En-
forcement Division licenses Motor Vehicle Inspec-
tionStations (Chapter 14, Acts of 1977). Thework
includes investigation of complaints, initial certifi-

cation, routine inspections, and revocations. The
Division also processes all safety equipment repair
orders issued by police agencies to ensure compli-
ance or vehicle registration suspension (Code
Transportation Article, sec. 23-102).

AVIATION DIVISION

Throughout Maryland twenty-four hours a day,
the Aviation Division provides helicopter service to
evacuate those seriously injured on highways and
other persons requiring immediate transport to medi-
cal assistance. Its other missions include search and
rescue, criminal investigation support, traffic control,
and support in disasters and civil disturbances.

CRIME LABORATORY DIVISION

The Crime Laboratory Division analyzes evi-
dence submitted by all Maryland law enforcement
agencies investigating or prosecuting a criminal or
motor vehicle offense. Division personnel analyze
controlled dangerous substances, blood alcohol,
arson propellants, questioned documents, and
other physical evidence. The Division maintains
mobile evidence collection units in each region.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DIVISION

The Criminal Investigation Division initiates its own
criminal investigations, assists all headquarters and field
units with investigations, and conducts motor fuel and
fuel tax fraud investigations. The Division contains nine
units: Warrant/Fugitive; State Prosecutor's Office; En-
vironmental Crimes; White Collar Crimes; Computer
Crimes; Vehicle Theft; Polygraph; Criminal Investiga-
tion; and Special Assignment.

EXECUTIVE PROTECTION DIVISION

The Executive Protection Division provides secu-
rity for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney
General, Comptroller of the Treasury, and State Treas-
urer as required. The Security Services Unit provides
security to the members of the Executive Branch and
the leaders of the General Assembly
