Historic St. Mary's City was Maryland's first
settlement and for sixty-one years its colonial capi-
tal. It is one of three heritage parks and museums
operated by the Division of Historical and Cultural
Programs.
Through the work of the St. Mary's City Com-
mission, Historic St. Mary's City Park was com-
pleted in 1984, the year Maryland celebrated its
350th anniversary.

HISTORIC ST MARY'S CITY COMMISSION

The Historic St. Mary's City Commission origi-
nated in 1966 as the St. Mary's City Commission

(Chapter 115, Acts of 1966). Formerly under the
Department of Economic and Community Devel-
opment, the Commission became part of the De-
partment of Housing and Community
Development in 1987 (Chapter 311, Acts of
1987). The Commission received its present name
in 1991 (Chapter 590, Acts of 1991).
The Commission preserves, develops, and main-
tains Historic St. Mary's City, the site of Maryland's
first capital. The Commission studies and interprets
St. Mary's City in the context of the Chesapeake Bay
region from prehistory to the present, with empha-
sis on the early colonial period. The Commission
may acquire historical and cultural properties nec-
essary for the proper use and administration of
Historic St. Mary's City. The Commission also may
accept private gifts, as well as federal. State and local
government grants.
The Commission has thirteen members. Twelve
are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor
with Senate advice and consent. The Chairperson
of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary's College of
Maryland serves ex officio. The Commission ap-
points the Executive Director (Code 1957, Art.
83B, secs. 5-201 through 5-212).

ADVISORY COMMISSION ON
INDUSTRIALIZED BUILDING & MOBILE
HOMES

Formerly under the Division of Community Assis-
tance, the Commission has been inactive since
1992.

BANNEKER-DOUGIASS MUSEUM OF
AFRO-AMERICAN LIFE AND HISTORY

In 1993, renamed Banneker-Douglass Museum of
African-American History and Culture.

DIVISION OF FINANCE

Reorganized in 1992 as the Division of Finance and
Administration.

GOVERNOR'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON
MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGY

Formerly under the Division of Historical and Cul-
tural Programs, the Committee completed its work
in 1992.

HOUSING SUBSIDY PROGRAMS

Formerly under the Division of Housing Finance,
renamed Rental Service Programs July 1,1993.

INSURANCE ORIGINATION

Under the Maryland Housing Fund, functions were
reassigned to Multi-Family Programs and Single-
Family Programs in 1992.

MARYLAND ETHNIC HERITAGE COMMISSION

Abolished in 1992 (Chapter 227, Acts of 1992).

OFFICE OF CENTRAL SERVICES

Under the Division of Finance and Administration,
renamed Office of Facilities Fleet Management and
Support Services on July 1,1993.

OFFICE OF CULTURAL & EDUCATIONAL
SERVICES

Within the Division of Historical and Cultural Pro-
grams, the Office was disbanded in 1992. Its func-
tions were assigned to the Office of Research,
Survey, and Registration.

REAL ESTATE SERVICES

Under the Maryland Housing Fund, Real Estate
Services ceased to function in 1992 due to budget
constraints.

SMALL CITIES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM

Under the Division of Community Assistance, re-
named Program Services in 1993.
