The Workers' Compensation Commission orig-
inated in 1914 as the State Industrial Accident
Commission (Chapter 800, Acts of 1914). In 1957,
it was renamed the Workmen's Compensation
Commission (Chapter 584, Acts of 1957), and its
present name was adopted January 1, 1986.
The Commission administers the Workers'
Compensation Law. The Commission hears con-
tested cases and holds hearings throughout the
State, receives reports of accidents, and adjudicates
claims for compensation arising under the law
(Code 1957, Art. 101, secs. 1, 2, 5,16, 38-40).
The Commission publishes the Annual Report of
the Workers' Compensation Commission, and Brochure
of Questions and Answers about Maryland's Workers'
Compensation Law, both available free upon re-
quest. The Commission also issues Workers' Com-
pensation Law of Maryland (annotated), for which
there is a charge.
The Commission consists of ten members ap-
pointed to twelve-year terms by the Governor with
Senate advice and consent. The Governor desig-
nates the chairperson.
