The Office directs two chronic and rehabilitative
hospital centers—Deer's Head Center and Western
Maryland Center. Montebello Center is operated
through a contract with the University of Maryland.
That contract is monitored by the Office of Chronic
and Rehabilitation Facilities. The Office also admin-
isters the Rehabilitation Information Service.

Created in 1984, the Rehabilitation Information
Service provides information on rehabilitation ser-
vices to persons who have suffered amputation,
stroke, spinal cord injury or head trauma (Chapter
416, Acts of 1984). The Service also responds to
the needs of other disabled individuals. Inquiries are
accepted from anywhere in Maryland (Code
Health—General Article, sec. 20-108).

DEER'S HEAD CENTER

Authorized by Chapter 994, Acts of 1945,
Deer's Head Center was established in 1950. It is a
regional facility for chronically ill and elderly adults
in need of medical and rehabilitation services, or
general medical care for chronic disease or terminal
illness. The Center also operates a kidney dialysis
facility for area residents.

Deer's Head Center provides the services of a
chronic disease hospital (including a small hospice
service) and a comprehensive care facility, as well as
outpatient and end-stage kidney dialysis, and out-
patient rehabilitation therapy. The licensed capacity
for the Center is 188 hospital beds and 33 compre-
hensive care beds (Code Health—General Article,
sec. 19-502).

MONTEBELLO CENTER

Authorized by Chapter 412, Acts of 1951, Mon-
tebello Center opened in 1953. Montebello is a
comprehensive care rehabilitation center, accredited
by the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilita-
tion Facilities. Funded through the Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene, the Center is operated
as an integral part of the University of Maryland
Medical System.

The Center provides intensive rehabilitation ser-
vices to patients with head and spinal cord injury
and other trauma, stroke, and rehabilitable disabil-
ities. It also provides rehabilitation services to out-
patients (Code Health—General Article, secs.
19-501 through 19-513).

WESTERN MARYLAND CENTER

Western Maryland Center was established as
Western Maryland State Hospital in 1952 (Chapter
53, Acts of 1952). It opened in 1957.

The Center provides chronic hospital and com-
prehensive care facility inpatient care, outpatient
end-stage kidney dialysis, adult day treatment ser-
vices, and outpatient rehabilitation services. Cur-
rently, it has 117 licensed hospital beds and 58
licensed comprehensive care beds for rehabilitation
services and the care of the chronically ill. An out-
patient unit provides hemodialysis for patients with
chronic kidney disease (Code Health—General Ar-
ticle, sec. 19-502).
