LUCILLE MAURER

State Treasurer

Elected in January 1987, Lucille Maurer is the
first woman to serve as State Treasurer and the
twenty-first Treasurer since the Constitution of
1851 provided for the selection of the Treasurer by
the General Assembly.

A resident of Montgomery County since 1950,
Ms. Maurer served in the House of Delegates from
1969 until 1987. She was a member of the Ways
and Means Committee for sixteen years and also
chaired the Joint Committee on Federal Relations
for four years. She is widely known for her
experience in developing funding formulas for the
public schools and for her legislative leadership in
fiscal affairs.

During the years she served in the legislature,
Ms. Maurer also was active in the National
Conference of State Legislatures, chairing the
Education Committee, 1979-1980, and the Tax
and Trade Committee, 1985-1986. From 1980 to
1982, she served on the Intergovernmental
Advisory Council of the U. S. Department of
Education as a Presidential appointee.

Before becoming a Delegate, Ms. Maurer was
twice elected to the Montgomery County Board of
Education, serving simultaneously as a Trustee of
Montgomery College from 1960 to 1968. In 1967,
she was elected to the Maryland Constitutional
Convention where she served on the Executive
Branch committee.

Born in New York on November 21, 1922, Ms.
Maurer grew up in Rockland County, New York.
She attended the then Woman's College of the
University of North Carolina and was graduated
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill in 1942 with a major in Economics. After
working for the U. S. Tariff Commission as an
economist, she attended Yale University and
obtained an M. A. in General Studies in 1945. Ms.
Maurer was awarded an honorary Doctor of
Humanities from Hood College in 1984.

Ms. Maurer is a member of many community
organizations, such as the League of Women
Voters. She is the recipient of many honors and
awards from groups such as the Maryland
Association of Boards of Education, Maryland
Association of Counties, Maryland Association for
Retarded Children, and chapters of the Business
and Professional Women, National Organization
for Women, and the American Association of
University Women. She is listed in Who's Who in
Government, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's
Who of American Women, Foremost Women of the
Twentieth Century, and Community Leaders and
Noteworthy Americans.

Ms. Maurer is married to Ely Maurer, an
Assistant Legal Adviser in the U. S. Department of
State. They have three grown sons, Stephen,
Russell, and Edward.
