The Committee consists of eighteen members.
Twelve are appointed to three-year terms by the
Governor. The six remaining members include a
State senator, designated by the Senate President;
a delegate, designated by the House Speaker; a
representative of the Department of Agriculture,
designated by the Secretary of Agriculture; a repre-
sentative of the Department of Natural Resources
and a representative of the Department's Tidewater
Administration, both designated by the Secretary
of Natural Resources; and a representative of the
University of Maryland College of Agriculture, des-
ignated by the Chancellor of the University of
Maryland System (Code Agriculture Article, secs.
10-1301,10-1302).

The Maryland Agricultural Commission was
formed in 1961 as the Agricultural Advisory Board
(Chapter 470, Acts of 1961). The Board was re-
named the Maryland Agricultural Commission in
1968 (Chapter 552, Acts of 1968). The Com-
mission's chief function is to advance Maryland
agriculture and advise the Secretary of Agriculture
on agricultural matters. The Commission proposes
agricultural improvements, promotes State agricul-
tural industries and products, and advises the De-
partment of Natural Resources on proposed
wetland regulations.
The Commission consists of seventeen mem-
bers. Sixteen are appointed by the Governor for
three-year terms. The principal administrative offi-
cer for agricultural affairs at the University of Mary-
land serves ex officio. (Code Agriculture Article,

data processing, and central services for the Depart-
ment.

The Assistant Secretary for Animal Health and
Consumer Services directs three sections: Animal
Health, Meat and Poultry Inspection, and Weights
and Measures. Also within the Office are the State
Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and the
Board of Inspection of Horse Riding Stables. The
Office furnishes administrative support to the
Wholesome Meat Advisory Council.

The Animal Health Section works to control
and eradicate livestock and poultry diseases that
have a significant economic impact on producers or
pose a threat to human health due to their trans-
missibility from animals to people (Code Agricul-
ture Article, secs. 3-101 through 3-503).
