GREEN RIDGE YOUTH CENTER

In May 1955, Green Ridge Youth Center was
established in Allegany County. Originally, the
Center was operated by the State Department of
Public Welfare in cooperation with the State De-
partment of Forests and Parks. The Center ac-
commodates thirty-five boys.

The 1965 General Assembly appropriated funds
to establish a permanent center at Maple Run in
the Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany County
(Chapter 743, Acts of 1965). The Center opened
in 1967 with facilities for thirty-five boys.

Meadow Mountain Youth Center opened Octo-
ber 1984, in Garrett County. It has facilities for
thirty boys.

The success of the first youth center at Green
Ridge prompted the General Assembly to appro-
priate funds for additional facilities in 1956
(Chapter 98, Acts of 1956). Savage Mountain
Youth Center opened in 1957 and now accommo-
dates thirty-five boys.

The State Advisory Board for Juvenile Services
was created in 1966 as the State Advisory Board
of Juvenile Services (Chapter 126, Acts of 1966).
In 1987, the Board received its present name (Sen-
ate Bill no. 672). The Board recommends to the
Director of the Juvenile Services Agency policies
and programs designed to improve State juvenile
services. The Board participates in planning for
development and use of resources to meet Agency
needs as well as in interpreting Agency objectives
to the public.
The Board consists of eighteen members. They
are appointed by the Governor and include repre-
sentatives of the Juvenile Services Agency, the
State Department of Education, the Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Social Services
Administration, the Maryland State Police, the
General Assembly, the judiciary, and a child wel-
fare agency. Seven members represent the public.
Of these, three must be between the ages of six-
teen and twenty-five and at least one must have
been under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile
Services Agency. Members serve three-year terms.
The Governor designates the chairperson (Code
1957, Art. 41C, sees. 2-106 through 2-110).
