The State Board of Podiatric Medical Examin-
ers was created in 1916 as the State Board of Chi-
ropody Examiners (Chapter 173, Acts of 1916).
In 1965, it became the State Board of Podiatry
Examiners (Chapter 416, Acts of 1965). The
Board was renamed the State Board of Podiatric
Medical Examiners in 1986 (Chapter 243, Acts of
1986). The Board examines all persons who wish
to practice podiatry in the State. The examina-
tions, which may be written, oral, or practical, are
given twice yearly. Applicants must have at least
two years of education in a recognized college of
arts and sciences and be graduates of a college of
podiatric medicine recognized by the American
Podiatry Association.
The Board also issues biennial licenses to all
podiatrists engaged in active practice within the
State. The Board may, after a hearing, revoke the
license of any podiatrist who is charged with mal-
practice or unethical conduct.
The Board consists of six members appointed
by the Governor with the advice of the Secretary
of Health and Mental Hygiene. Five are licensed
podiatrists chosen from a list submitted by the
Maryland Podiatric Medical Association. One is a
consumer appointed with the advice and consent
of the Senate. Members serve five-year terms.

The State Board of Examiners of Professional
Counselors was created in 1985 (Chapter 734,
Acts of 1985). The Board certifies professional
counselors and regulates professional counseling
services within the State.
The Board consists of six members appointed
by the Governor with the advice of the Secretary
of Health and Mental Hygiene. Five members are
certified professional counselors or persons eligible
to be certified; all of these members must be certi-
fied by July 1, 1989. The sixth member is a con-
sumer who is not trained as a professional
counselor nor has participated in a related field,
and has no substantial financial interest in a per-
son regulated by the Board. The consumer mem-
ber may not have a household member who is a
professional counselor or in training to become
one. Nor may a member of the consumer's house-
hold participate in a related field. Members serve
three-year terms. Authorization for the Board
continues until July 1, 1989 (Code Health Occu-

The practice of psychology in Maryland is regu-
lated by the State Board of Examiners of Psychol-
ogists. Established in 1957, the Board evaluates
the qualifications of psychologists in the State and
issues licenses to those who fulfill the require-
ments (Chapter 748, Acts of 1957). Licenses must
be renewed biennially. The Board administers ex-
aminations to qualified applicants for licensing at
least twice each year. The Board maintains a ros-
ter of psychologists licensed in the State.
The Board consists of six members. Five are
psychologists appointed by the Governor upon
