The Regional Institute at Rockville provides
treatment for emotionally handicapped children
from Montgomery and Frederick counties. It of-
fers an intensive diagnostic and treatment unit,
and residential and day treatment. Educational
services are provided by the Montgomery County
Department of Education.
Day treatment is provided for 50 children be-
tween the ages of 13 and 18 (day treatment capac-
ity 120). The facility is currently licensed for 56
beds (capacity 80).

Springfield Hospital Center was established in
1894 as Second Hospital for the Insane of the
State of Maryland (Chapter 231, Acts of 1894).
The Hospital opened for patients in 1896. It was
renamed Springfield State Hospital in 1900 (Chap-
ter 70, Acts of 1900).
The Center admits mentally ill patients from
Baltimore City and from Carroll, Frederick, Gar-
rett, Howard, and Montgomery counties. The fa-
cility is licensed for 1,650 patients (Code
Health—General Article, sec. 10-406).

Spring Grove Hospital Center is the oldest hos-
pital for the mentally ill in Maryland, and the
third oldest in the United States. It was estab-
lished in 1797 as the Maryland Hospital in Balti-
more City (Chapter 102, Acts of 1797). In 1872,
the Hospital moved to Catonsville as the Mary-
land Hospital for the Insane. It was renamed
Spring Grove State Hospital in 1912 (Chapter
187, Acts of 1912).
The Center admits mentally ill patients from
Baltimore, Harfbrd, and Prince George's counties.
The facility is licensed for 1,475 patients (Code
Health—General Article, sec. 10-406).
