Opened in 1968, the Maryland Psychiatric Re-
search Center is located on the grounds of Spring
Grove Hospital Center (Chapter 558, Acts of
1967). The University of Maryland operates the
Research Center under an agreement with the De-
partment.

The Center conducts a program of basic and ap-
plied interdisciplinary research into mental illness.
It also offers training in psychiatric and behavior-
al sciences research for graduate and postgraduate
students (Code Health—General Article, sec.
10^t25).

REGIONAL INSTITUTE FOR
CHILDREN AND
ADOLESCENTS—BALTIMORE

The Regional Institute provides intensive inpa-
tient and outpatient psychiatric care for children
who are seriously emotionally ill. The Institute,
which opened in 1958, is licensed for 80 residen-
tial patients, with a day treatment capacity for 24
adolescents.

REGIONAL INSTITUTE FOR
CHILDREN AND
ADOLESCENTS—CHELTENHAM

The Regional Institute opened as Cheltenham
Center in 1976. Then, it was funded by a State
grant from the Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene through the Prince George's County
Health Department. In 1982, the Center became a
State institution and was renamed the Regional
Institute for Children and Adolescents — Chel-
tenham (Chapter 891, Acts of 1982). It serves se-
verely emotionally disturbed boys and giris, ages
12 to 18 years old, from Prince George's, St.
Mary's, Calvert, and Charles counties.

Most of the young people at the Institute reside
there. The average length of stay is eight months.
Some are day students who receive therapy and
schooling at the Institute but live at home. The
Institute's 40 residential beds include 5 for stu-
dents referred by the court for evaluation.
