Analysis of figures indicating trends and other
pertinent statistical data appear in quarterly re-
ports and an annual report entitled Crime in
Maryland (Code 1957, Art. 27, secs. 742-755).
Under the State Police, the Criminal Records
Central Repository is responsible for the collec-
tion, storage, and dissemination of criminal history
record information.
The Central Accident Records Division is re-
sponsible for receipt compilation, analysis and
distribution of motor vehicle accident reports from
all Maryland law enforcement agencies. Aggregate
accident data is provided to the State Highway
Administration, and police agencies; individual
records are provided as requested to individuals.
The Electronic Services Division maintains com-
munication equipment for State Police and allied
State, federal, and local agencies. The Division
maintains electronic devices, including VASCAR
and RADAR for the State Police, and assists other
agencies when equipment is of similar design.
The State Police operates a Police Academy for
the training of its personnel. These facilities are
available to all other law enforcement agencies
throughout the State.
SPECIAL OPERATIONS BUREAU
The Special Operations Bureau is responsible for
specialized investigation functions, specific indus-
try regulatory activities and certain statewide law
enforcement support functions.
The Special Services Division gathers informa-
tion pertaining to organized crime, and investigates
violations of narcotics and dangerous drug laws, as
well as gambling, bookmaking, and other vice
crimes. The Division concentrates on long range
and covert investigations that affect large scale
dealers and distributors.
The Investigation Division of the State Police
has the responsibility to conduct requested crimi-
nal investigations that occur anywhere within
Maryland. This responsibility includes detection
and arrest of criminal offenders, recovery of lost
and stolen property, handling extradition proceed-
ings, and performing other investigations as direct-
ed by the Superintendent.
The Licensing Division is charged with licensing
private detectives and security guards (Code 1957,
Art. 56, secs. 75-92) and Maryland railroad police
(Chapter 469, Acts of 1979). It also registers
firearms (Code 1957, Art. 27, secs. 441^48) and
issues special police commissions (Code 1957, Art.
41, secs. 60-70). The Division is responsible for

investigating all applicants desiring to wear, carry,
or transport a handgun (Code 1957, Art. 27, sec.
36). The Division also operates a voluntary fire-
arms registration service for those acquiring or
owning firearms that are not controlled by other
statutes.
The Automotive Safety Enforcement Division is
responsible for licensing Motor Vehicle Inspection
Stations, including investigation of complaints,
initial certification, routine inspections and revoca-
tions. The Division also processes all safety equip-
ment repair orders issued by police agencies to
ensure compliance or vehicle registration suspen-
sion.
The Executive Protection Division provides se-
curity for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor,
Attorney General, and Comptroller as required-
The Security Services Unit provides security to
other members of the Executive Branch and the
leaders of the General Assembly.
The Truck Enforcement Division enforces Mo-
tor Vehicle Code provisions pertaining to size,
weight, and load of vehicles (Code Transportation
Article, secs. 24-101, 24-112). It also enforces laws
governing motor fuel tax (Code 1957, Art. 56, secs.
135-157) and fraud resulting from the sale of
motor fuels and lubricants (Code 1957, Art. 27,
secs. 231-233).
The Aviation Division provides helicopter ser-
vice throughout Maryland twenty-four hours a day
to evacuate seriously injured highway and other
victims requiring immediate transport to medical
assistance. Other missions include search and
rescue, criminal investigation support, traffic con-
trol, and support in disasters and civil distur-
bances.
The Crime Laboratory Division analyzes evi-
dence submitted by all Maryland law enforcement
agencies pursuing the investigation or prosecution
of a criminal or motor vehicle offense. Division
personnel analyze controlled dangerous sub-
stances, blood alcohol, arson propellants, ques-
tioned documents, and other physical evidence.
The Division maintains mobile evidence collection
units in each troop area.
By contractual agreement with the State Avia-
tion Administration, the State Police provide secu-
rity and investigative and patrol services for
Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

The Field Operations Bureau includes Head-
quarters support staff units and seven regional
