applied interdisciplinary research into mental ill-
ness. It also offers training in psychiatric and
behavioral sciences research for graduate and post-

The Regional Institute provides intensive inpa-
tient and outpatient psychiatric care for children
who are seriously emotionally ill. The Institute,
which opened in 1958, is licensed for 80 residential
patients, with a day treatment capacity for 24
adolescents.

The Regional Institute at Rockville provides
treatment services for emotionally handicapped
children from Montgomery and Frederick
counties. It offers an intensive diagnostic and
treatment unit, residential treatment, and day
treatment. Educational services are provided by
the Montgomery County Department of Educa-
tion,
Day treatment is provided for 50 children be-
tween the ages of 13 and 18 (day treatment
capacity 120). The facility is currently licensed for
56 beds (capacity 80).

Springfield Hospital Center opened for patients in
1896. The Center admits mentally ill patients from
Baltimore City and from Carroll, Frederick, Gar-
rett, Howard, and Montgomery counties. The
facility is licensed for 1,650 patients (Code
Health-General Article, sec. 10-406).
