Eastern Shore Hospital Center, established by
Chapter 187, Acts of 1912, admitted its first
patients in 1915. This hospital provides for the care
of mentally ill patients who are residents of the
Eastern Shore. The facility is licensed for 462
patients (Code Health-General Article, sec.
10^06).

Opened in October 1978, the Thomas B. Finan
Center provides services to children and adoles-
cents, and adult and aged individuals with mental
disabilities. The Center also provides services for
substance abusers and mentally retarded persons.
Licensed for 300 residents, it serves Allegany,
Garrett, and Washington counties (Code
Health-General Article, sec. 10-406).

The Highland Health Psychiatric Unit provides
psychiatric treatment for residents of Baltimore
City in close coordination with the three local
community mental health programs in their desig-
nated areas. It is presently licensed for 48 beds
(Code Health-General Article, sec. 10-406).

The Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center was
established by Chapter 814, Acts of 1959, as
Maximum Security Hospital. It adopted its present
name in 1960. The facility is designed to provide
active treatment programs within a setting of
maximum security.

The Center receives patients who are referred by
the courts of Maryland for pretrial psychiatric
evaluation. It provides a residence for individual
offenders who have been found not guilty by
reason of insanity, as well a hospital for inmates of
penal institutions who become mentally ill and
require involuntary psychiatric hospitalization.
From other State psychiatric hospitals, the Center
also accepts transfer patients whose illness requires
maximum security treatment for a period of time.
The Center is designed for a capacity of 246
patients (Code Health-General Article, sec.
10-406).
