Crownsville Hospital Center, established by
Chapter 250, Acts of 1910, as the Hospital for
the Negro Insane of Maryland, was opened to
patients in 1911. It adopted its present name by
Chapter 187, Acts of 1912. Chapter 685, Acts of
1949, omitted reference to race. The hospital ad-
mits mentally ill patients from Anne Arundel,
Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's counties as well
as some patients from Baltimore City. Crowns-
ville is located approximately eight miles west of
Annapolis on Route 178, four miles from Route
3. The facility is licensed for 625 patients and in-
cludes programs for the mentally retarded and al-
coholic (Code Health-General Article, sec.
10-406).

Eastern Shore Hospital Center, established by
Chapter 187, Acts of 1912, admitted its first pa-
tients in 1915. This hospital provides for the care
of mentally ill patients who are residents of the
Eastern Shore. The facility is licensed for 462 pa-
tients (Code Health-General Article, sec. 10-406).

The Thomas B. Finan Center was established
by Article 59, sec. 31, Annotated Code of Mary-
land. The first residents were admitted in October
1978. The Center is a multi-program facility,
which provides services to children and adoles-
cents, and adult and aged individuals with mental
disabilities. It also provides services for substance
abusers and mentally retarded persons. The Cen-
ter serves the residents of Allegany, Garrett, and
Washington counties. The facility is licensed for
300 residents (Code Health-General Article, sec.
10-406).

The Highland Health Psychiatric Unit provides
public sector psychiatric treatment for residents
of Baltimore City who historically had been treat-
ed at Crownsville Hospital Center. Located on
the grounds of Baltimore City Hospitals, the Unit
was redirected in 1978 to provide treatment in
close coordination with the three local communi-
ty mental health programs in their designated
areas. It is presently licensed for 48 beds (Code
Health-General Article, sec. 10-406).
