The office of Lieutenant Governor was created by a Constitutional Amendment ratified by the peo-
ple on November 3, 1970 (Chapter 532, Acts of 1970). The Lieutenant Governor is the second-ranking
officer of the State. He is elected for a term of four years by popular vote at the same election at which
the Governor is elected. His term of office begins on the third Wednesday in January following his
election. The eligibility requirements for Lieutenant Governor are the same as those for the Governor.
The Lieutenant Governor performs duties delegated to him by the Governor (Const. 1867, Art. II,

The Lieutenant Governor succeeds to the office of Governor in the event of a vacancy in that office.
He also serves as Acting Governor when notified in writing by the Governor that the Governor will be
temporarily unable to perform the duties of his office (Const. 1867, Art. II, secs. 4, 5, 6).
