The Board of Social Work Examiners, created
by Chapter 453, Acts of 1975, consists of five
members appointed by the Governor for three-
year terms. Four members must be licensed social
workers. One member is a consumer member ap-
pointed on the recommendation of the Secretary
with the advice and consent of the Senate who
cannot have training as a social worker or have a
financial interest in a related field. One member is
selected from a list of nominees presented by the
Maryland Chapter of the National Association of
Social Workers and one from the Metropolitan
Washington Chapter of the National Association
of Social Workers. The Board issues licenses to
Social Work Associates, Graduate Social Work-
ers, and Certified Social Workers. Under certain
conditions the Board may take disciplinary mea-
sures to reprimand, suspend, revoke, or refuse to
renew the license of a licensee (Code 1957, Art.
43, secs. 840-851).

The State Board of Examiners for Speech Pa-
thologists, created by Chapter 547, Acts of 1972,
consists of six members appointed by the Gover-
nor upon recommendation of the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene for five-year terms,
one term expiring each year. The members of the
Board must be residents of Maryland, three of

whom must have had paid work experience in
speech pathology for at least five years, hold the
certificate of clinical competence in speech pathol-
ogy of the American Speech and Hearing Associ-
ation or the equivalent, and be approved by the
Maryland Speech and Hearing Association. One
member must have had paid work experience in
audiology for at least five years, hold the certifi-
cate of clinical competence in audiology of the
American Speech and Hearing Association or the
equivalent, and be approved by the Maryland
Speech and Hearing Association. One member
must be a person licensed to practice medicine in
Maryland and hold a certificate of qualification
from the American Board of Otolaryngology.
One member must be a consumer, who has no
training or financial interest in the field of speech
pathology.
The Board evaluates the qualifications of
speech pathologists in Maryland and issues li-
censes to those who fulfill the requirements. The
licenses are renewed annually (Code 1957, Art.
43, secs. 790-808).

This Board was created by Chapter 430, Acts
of 1967, and modified by Chapter 999, Acts of
1980. The Board consists of nine qualified per-
sons appointed by the Governor, with the advice
and consent of the Senate, representing one or
more of the following constituencies or disci-
plines: municipal government, county govern-
ment, sanitary or metropolitan commissions, wa-
terworks supervision, wastewater or industrial
wastewater works supervision, agriculture, and
one engineer representative each of the Depart-
