The Maryland Savings-Share Insurance
Corporation was created by Chapter 131,
Acts of 1962, to insure savings and loan and
building and loan associations throughout
the State. Membership in the Corporation is
on a voluntary basis, and is available to all
savings and loan associations throughout the
State that meet the qualifications of the
Maryland Savings-Share Insurance Corpora-
tion. The Corporation is funded by the
member savings and loan associations.
The Corporation consists of eleven di-
rectors, eight of whom are elected by the
member associations and are representa-
tives of the member savings and loan asso-
ciations. All terms after the initial selection
are for four years. The Governor with the
advice of the Secretary of Licensing and
Regulation, appoints three directors for
four-year terms. The Corporation selects its
own Chairman and adopts its own rules,
by-laws and regulations (Code 1957, 1966
Repl. Vol., Art. 23, sees. 161MM-161XX).

The State Scholarship Board, created by
Chapter 412, Acts of 1961, consists of nine
persons appointed by the Governor. The
membership consists of one President of a
State college or university, or his nominee;
one President of a private college or uni-
versity, or his nominee; one President of a
community college, or his nominee; a fi-
nancial aid officer of a college which is
recognized and approved by the State Board
for Higher Education, and which provides
a course of study leading to the granting of
a post-secondary degree or diploma; one
representative of the public high schools lo-
cated within the State; and four citizens
chosen for their interest in higher education. |
The Governor designates the Chairman.
Members serve six-year terms.
The Board administers the General State
Scholarships, Senatorial Scholarships, House
of Delegates Scholarships, Reimbursement
of Firemen, Grants for War Orphans, and
children of MIA and POW servicemen,
Scholarships for Orphans of Firemen and
Policemen, Scholarships for Teachers of
persons with impaired hearing including the
deaf, Scholarships for Vietnam Veterans,
Scholarships in Medicine (University of
Maryland), Family Practice Residency
Grants and scholarships at the Professional
Schools. The Board is empowered to imple-
ment these scholarship programs by appro-
priate rules and regulations, to provide for
and conduct examinations of applicants, to
determine financial need, and to select the
scholarship recipients (except the Sena-
torial scholarship program). A brochure
