ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
ADMINISTRATION
Donald H. Noren, Director
201 W. Preston Street,
Baltimore 21201 Telephone: 383-2740
The mission of the Environmental Health
Administration is to foster and protect the
public health and well-being by providing
an environment free of the uncontrolled
release or disposal of toxic, hazardous or
undesirable substances or emissions, and by
affording the consumer safe and wholesome
food, drugs, and other consumable products.
These program goals are pursued by the
Administration's three Bureaus — Air Qual-
ity and Noise Control, Sanitary Engineering,
and Food and Drugs.
The Bureau of Air Quality and Noise
Control develops air resource management
plans, enforces applicable regulations for
control of emissions from stationary and
indirect (complex) sources, provides en-
gineering expertise to develop required
control equipment, and maintains a compre-
hensive, State-wide air monitoring system
to ensure instantaneous knowledge of am-
bient pollutant levels in order to institute
emergency procedures for their control. The
Bureau coordinates the State noise control
program, provides technical assistance, en-
forces environmental noise regulations and
responds to public complaints.
The Bureau of Sanitary Engineering is
charged with the public health protection
and safety of drinking water supplies, shell-
fish-growing waters, and contact recrea-
tional waters, such as camps, swimming
pools and bathing beaches. It is concerned
with the treatment and disposal of waste-
water, such as sanitary sewage and storm
drainage waters. Its responsibilities also
comprise the collection and disposal of
solid waste including household refuse, sew-
age sludge, and hazardous wastes. The
Bureau awards grants, comprising both Fed-
eral and State funds, for the construction of
water and sewage treatment plants and re-
lated facilities and trains plant and facility
personnel. |
