Wilson Center, established in 1926, is the State's institution for the treatment of patients with tuberculosis or other chronic lung di- seases. With the decline in the number of tuberculosis cases, parts of the hospital have been converted to use for geriatric and mentally re- tarded patients. Tumbusch, M.D„ Director Hagerstown (Washington County) 21740 Telephone: 789-6300 Western Maryland State Hospital, authorized by Chapter 53, Acts of 1952, was opened in 1957 and has 232 licensed beds for rehabilita- tion services and the care of the chronically ill. An out-patient unit is maintained to provide hemodialysis for patients with chronic kidney disease. 50 Skilled nursing home beds are provided. Robert Evans, A.B., J.D., Director 2305 North Charles Street, Baltimore 21218 Telephone: 383-2693 The Drug Abuse Administration, created by Chapter 29, Acts of 1971, succeeded the Drug Abuse Authority established by Chapter 404, Acts of 1969. The Director and the Medical Director of the Administra- tion are appointed by the Governor with the advice of the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene and serve at the Secretary's pleasure. The Drug Abuse Administration surveys and analyzes the State's needs and formulates a plan of services and facilities for the preven- tion and control of drug abuse and the diagnosis, treatment and re- habilitation of drug abusers. It also develops programs in the field of drug abuse, carries on pilot clinic programs for the treatment of drug addiction and the control of drug addicts, provides education and train- ing in drug addiction and control and disseminates information relating to private and public services and facilities in the State available for the assistance of drug abusers. The administration also has the power to establish facilities for the treatment of drug abuse. It also is to pro- vide for a Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Center for the study, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of drug abusers. It also administers a grant-in-aid funding program for multi-modality private drug control programs (Code 1957, 1971 Repl, Vol., 1972 Supp., Art. 43B).
