Sewage disposal plants operated by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Com- mission are near Laurel, at Piscataway Bay, and at the Western Branch of the Patuxent River. The Commission's facilities are geared to an anticipated growth of the service area population of 2,100,000 projected by local planning agencies for arrival by the year 2000. Howie Executive Director: Vacancy 8720 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring 20910 Telephone: 587-8770 The Washington Suburban Transit Commission, created by Chapter 870, Acts of 1965, consists of six commissioners, of whom three are appointed by the Montgomery County Executive and three by the Prince George's County Executive. Commissioners who are appointed serve at the pleasure of the Executive, and commissioners who are not appointed from among the members of the governing bodies serve for a period of three years. The Secretary of Transportation serves as an ex officio commissioner. The Commission was established to manage and control the func- tions and activities of the Washington Suburban Transit District with powers to develop, on a bi-county basis, a transportation system includ- ing mass transit facilities for the needs and growth of both counties. The Commission supplies to the interstate agency, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, two members of their Board of Directors and two alternates. The Commission works in conjunction with the interstate authority which has developed a regional rapid rail transit system for the entire Washington metropolitan area. The system has been under construc- tion since December 1969. The Commission will supply the funds to meet the obligation for the cost of the transit facilities and services in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.
