Saba- tini, Jr. 93 Main Street, Annapolis 21401 Telephone: 267-5961 The Maryland Council on Higher Education originally created by Chapter 41, Acts of 1963, as the Advisory Council on Higher Educa- tion had its function expanded by Chapter 40, Acts of 1964 and Chapter 213, Acts of 1966. The General Assembly further expanded the membership of the Council, and changed its name by Chapter 130, Acts of 1968. The Council consists of thirteen members appointed from the citizens of the State by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate, by reason of their knowledge of and interest in higher education. Membership of the Council consists of one representative of the University of Maryland, one representative of the State Col- leges, one member of the State Board for Community Colleges, and a representative of the private institutions of higher education. Mem- bers serve six-year terms, except for the initial membership which was staggered. The Council prepares programs for the orderly growth and the over- all development of the State system of higher education, the investi- gation of needs throughout the State for undergraduate, graduate and adult education, for professional and technical training and for research facilities. The Council also has the responsibility for the presentation of plans and recommendations for the establishment and location of new facilities and programs. The Council conducts studies regarding the Statewide coordination of the activities of the public institutiuns of higher learning, academi- cally, administratively, and fiscally and makes recommendations to the governing boards of public institutions of higher education, as well as to State officials. The agencies and institutions having custody of and responsibility for data, statistics, and information on matters pending before or of interest to the Council are required to comply with any reasonable request of the Council for such information. Any institution of higher education which has functions and pro- grams within the scope of the duties, functions, and interests of the Council, and which submits any program, plan, or proposal to any |
