Meat and Poultry Inspection Division The Meat and Poultry Inspection Division has the responsibility of assuring the Maryland consumer with a wholesome supply of meat and poultry. This is accomplished by a staff of 46 meat and poultry in- spectors assigned to 96 slaughtering and processing plants located throughout the State. Fifty percent of the cost of the State Meat and Poultry Inspection is provided by the federal government (Agriculture Article, sees. 4-101 to 4-131; 4-210 to 4-230). Johnson, Director Parole Plaza Office Building, Annapolis 21401 Telephone: 267-1161 Division of Entomology There are four major programs supervised by this office: the State Mosquito Control Program, the State Plant Protection Program, the Pesticide Applicator's Law, and the State Beekeeping Law. The chief is the principal State authority on plant protection and agricultural quarantines and provides liaison for the State Department of Agricul- ture with other federal and State regulatory officials (Agriculture Article, sees. 5-201 to 5-211, "Maryland Pesticide Applicator's Law," 5-301 to 5-312; 5-401 to 5-406 and 5-501 to 5-507). Office of Weed Control The goal of the Weed Control Program is to prevent certain un- desirable noxious weeds from contaminating land in Maryland and re- claiming land from areas where such contamination has occurred. The present activity of the Maryland Weed Control Program is concen- trated on bringing johnsongrass under control within the State. The Johnsongrass Control Program is basically split into two sec- tions: those activities which are mainly regulatory and those activities which are designed to assist land owners to bring their johnsongrass under control either through their own efforts or through the joint efforts of the county and State (Agriculture Article, sees. 9-401 to 9-405). Turf & Seed Program The objective of the Turf program is to provide accurate and com- plete labeling of sod at marketing, thus enabling the consumer to de- termine what he is getting prior to installation (Agriculture Article, sees. 9-101 to 9-110). The Maryland Seed Law and related service test- ing program provides accurate and completely labeled seed for con- sumption by Maryland seed consumers. Regulatory phase involves |
