Office of Weights & Measures
The Office of Weights and Measures has custody of the State's pri-
mary standards and other secondary standards, and equipment for the
enforcement of Maryland's Weights and Measures Law. It maintains
supervision over weighing and measuring devices, weights and meas-
ures (to include packages) offered for sale, sold, or in use in the State.
This office is also charged with supervision and licensing of dairy
inspection; jurisdiction of standards of offered for sale units of var-
ious items in the state including fluid milk products, meat, poultry and
seafood, solid dairy products, flour, berries and small fruits, liquid
fuels, etc. (Agriculture Article, sees. 11-101 to 11-509).
Field Inspection Service
The Field Inspection Service is charged with sampling, inspection of
labels and products, and removal from sale of products in violation of
seed law, feed law, fertilizer law, pesticide law, soil conditioner law,
lime law, egg law, Federal Egg Law, FDA Medicated Feed Mill In-
spection, Environment Protection Agency, pesticides applicators law
(Agriculture Article, sees. 4-301 to 4-312).
State Chemist
The State Chemist is responsible for the administration of the Mary-
land Commercial Fertilizer, Pesticide, Commercial Feed, and Agricul-
tural Lime Laws as presented by the State Legislature. The primary
function of the four statutes is to protect the consumer and the legiti-
mate producer from unscrupulous or careless manufacturers (Agricul-
ture Article, sees. 5-101 to 5-114; 6-101 to 6-117; 6-201 to 6-220; 6-301
to 6-310).
