The Commission may acquire historical or cultural properties pertaining to historic St. Mary's City and prop- erties necessary for the proper use and administration of the ancient city and its environs. The Commission may accept private gifts as well as federal, state and local governmental grants. The Commission reports annually to the Secretary of Economic and Community Devel- opment and the General Assembly as to its activities during the pre- ceding year (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Randall, Assistant Director 16 West Mulberry Street, Baltimore 21201 Telephone: 686-7470 The Maryland Arts Council was created by Chapter 644, Acts of 1967 to replace the Governor's Council on the Arts in Maryland, which had been established by Executive Order on March 30, 1966, in con- formity with the provisions of the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities. The Commission consists of eleven members. Nine of these members are appointed by the Governor for three-year terms. Two members must be members of the General Assembly, one of whom is to be appointed by the President of the Senate and the other by the Speaker of the House of Delegates. Members of the Council are chosen because of their participation in civic, educational and professional organiza- tions concerned with or engaged in the production of the performing visual or creative arts. Members must also represent all sections of the State geographically. The Council selects its own officers and employs the necessary staff members. The Council is authorized to conduct programs. Among these are grants to arts organizations for artistic events of all sorts, and projects of its own devising. The Council may also provide technical and consultative assistance to arts organizations throughout the State and design new or expanded arts programs. During the 1969 fiscal year, the Council became the agency through which the General Assembly makes the annual appropriations to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Center Stage. The Council is the recipient of an annual grant from the National Foundation of Arts and Humanities for program support (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Vol., Art. 41, sees. 387-396).
