The Maryland Bicentennial Commission, created by Chapter 458,
Acts of 1968, consists of fifteen members appointed to plan for the
commemoration of the American Revolution. Members of the Com-
mission are appointed by the Governor for terms of five years each.
Members may be reappointed. Members of the Commission elect their
own Chairman and appoint its Executive Director.
The Bicentennial Commission seeks to give emphasis to significant
events preceding and during the American Revolution, to encourage
the participation of State agencies and local groups in the commemo-
ration of the Bicentennial, and to coordinate Bicentennial plans and
activities.
The Bicentennial Commission has tentatively approved a plan for
Maryland's participation in the Bicentennial which provides a uni-
fying philosophy and framework for the commemoration and which
proposes specific projects. The Bicentennial Commission will directly
administer programs of national or statewide significance only when
another suitable agency or organization cannot be found or created.
The Maryland Bicentennial Commission will serve as a resource group
for the people of Maryland in terms of schedules, coordination, tech-
nical assistance, and program suggestion. It will provide funding
assistance for initial planning only.

The St. Mary's City Commission was created by Chapter .115, Acts
of 1966, to replace the St. Mary's City Restoration Study Commission
which had been appointed by the Governor in 1965 (Res. No. 41, Acts
of 1965).
The Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Secre-
tary of Economic and Community Development with the approval of
the Governor for five-year terms. Two of the Commissioners must be
residents of St. Mary's County and not fewer than five must be resi-
dents of the State of Maryland. The Commissioners are selected on the
basis of ability, public spirit, and historical and professional interest.
The Commission selects its own officers. It also, subject to the approval
of the Secretary of Economic and Community Development, appoints
the Director from without its membership.
The St. Mary's City Commission was created to preserve, develop
and maintain ancient St. Mary's City, Maryland's first settlement and
for sixty-one years the colonial capital of the Province. The Commis-
sion has responsibility for the reconstructed State House of 1676
