Members of the Com- mission are appointed by the Governor for terms of five years each. Members may be reappointed. Members of the Commission elect their own Chairman and appoint its Executive Director. The Bicentennial Commission seeks to give emphasis to significant events preceding and during the American Revolution, to encourage the participation of State agencies and local groups in the commemo- ration of the Bicentennial, and to coordinate Bicentennial plans and activities. The Bicentennial Commission has tentatively approved a plan for Maryland's participation in the Bicentennial which provides a uni- fying philosophy and framework for the commemoration and which proposes specific projects. The Bicentennial Commission will directly administer programs of national or statewide significance only when another suitable agency or organization cannot be found or created. The Maryland Bicentennial Commission will serve as a resource group for the people of Maryland in terms of schedules, coordination, tech- nical assistance, and program suggestion.
