ROSEWOOD STATE HOSPITAL

Rosewood State Hospital, established by Chapter 183, Acts of 1888,
as the Asylum and Training School for the Feeble Minded of the
State of Maryland, admitted its first children in 1889. From 1912 to
1961, it was known as Rosewood State Training' School. It adopted its
present name by Chapter 89, Acts of 1961. The Hospital provides for
the care, education, training, and habilitation of mentally retarded
children from all parts, of the State.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE ADMINISTRATION

The Preventive Medicine Administration consists of six programs.
The Maternal and Child Health program is concerned with prenatal
and postnatal care, preschool and school health programs, family plan-
ning, screening of newborn infants for heritable disorders (such as
PK.U), and poison control. Crippled Children's Services provides diag-
nosis, consultation, and care programming for a variety of handi-
capping conditions. Communicable Disease Control initiates measures
to prevent or to control epidemics, as well as implementing epidemi-
ological studies of diseases. Veterinary Medicine is concerned with
the control of animal diseases transmissible to man, as well as
inspection and licensing of kennels and pet shops and animal control.
Dental Health promotes community and institutional dental health
services, including the fluoridation of public water supplies. Emer-
gency Health Services is concerned with preparation for natural or
man-made disasters through means such as the Medical Self-Help
Training Program.
