The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is a govern-
mental agency created by an interstate Compact entered into by and
between the State of Maryland, the Commonwealth of Virginia and
the District of Columbia with the consent of Congress. Maryland
ratified the Compact by Chapter 869, Acts of 1966.
The Authority was created to plan, finance, and develop a regional
rapid transit system for the national capital region.
The Authority is controlled by a six-member Board of Directors
(and six alternate directors), two each appointed by the three signa-
tories to the Compact. The members from Maryland are appointed by
the Washington Suburban Transit Commission; the members from
Virginia by the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the
members from the District of Columbia by the District of Columbia
City Council.
The chief administrative officer of the Authority is the General
Manager, and subject to policy direction by the Board, is responsible
for all activities of the Authority (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Vol., 1971
Supp., Art. 41, sees. 317-1—317-86).
