270 MARYLAND MANUAL The Washington Suburban Transit Commission, created by Chapter 870, Acts of 1965, consists of six commissioners, of whom three are appointed by the Montgomery County Council and three by the Prince George's County Board of County Commissioners. Commissioners who are appointed from their respective body serve at the pleasure of that body, and commissioners who are not appointed from among the members of the governing bodies serve for a period of three years. The Commission was established to manage and control the func- tions and activities of the Washington Suburban Transit District with powers to develop, on a bi-county basis, a transportation system including mass transit facilities for the needs and growth of both counties. The Commission supplies to the interstate agency, the Wash- ington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, two members of their Board of Directors and two alternates. At the present time, the Com- mission has delegated as its principals Mr. Gleason and Mr. Sickles, and as its alternates Mrs. Kramer and Mrs. Spellman. The Commission works in conjunction with the interstate authority which lias developed a regional rapid rail transit system for the entire Washington metropolitan area. The Commission will also supply the funds to meet the obligation for the cost of the transit facilities and services In Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. The Com- mission contributed $1,640,762 to the WMATA in 1969 and will con- tribute $1,826,200 in the 1970 fiscal year.
