MARYLAND MANUAL 231 In carrying out its duties, the Maryland Historical Trust has enacted several programs. Included among these a statewide inventory of historic buildings, sites, and objects. This project is under way, leading up to a statewide plan for historic preservation. The submission of nominations to the National Register of Historic Places has com- menced and will be continuous. In addition, the Maryland Historical Trust is developing the Governor William Paca Gardens. It is also purchasing and restoring buildings in Annapolis which pertain to the American Revolution in preparation for the Bicentennial celebrations. The Maryland Historical Trust works in conjunction with other State agencies and public utilities to insure the protection of Maryland's heritage. In 1966, the Maryland Historical Trust initiated a three-year pro- gram by which it could select, purchase, and restore buildings in Maryland. These buildings would have protective covenants placed in their deeds to insure their protection. As funds are available, the Trust can make grants to responsible preservation organizations within the State, and other responsible organizations or foundations which need assistance in saving im- portant historical buildings. This grant-in-aid program is to encourage, with gifts or loans, local preservation projects by assistance to take option on property, obtain a mortgage or bank loan, meet a matching fund offer, or to launch or promote a drive for local funds. The Trust has been able to obtain federal and private funds for its programs, and has encouraged individuals in restoration projects.
