182 MARYLAND MANUAL The Governor appointed this Committee at the request of the Board of Natural Resources in 1967. The Committee consists of members of the House of Delegates and the Senate together with citizens from each of the basin counties. The Committee is to recommend what can be done to save the watershed from the threat of pollution, erosion, and urban encroachment and to initiate a plan for its development so that the pollution of the river and its tribu- taries may be abated. In July 1968, the Committee completed a report which warned that portions of the Patuxent River are now threatened with early destructive pollution and unsightly degradation unless immediate steps are taken to prevent this from happening. In its report, the Committee recommended that all existing water treat- ment plants be immediately brought to their maximum level of operating efficiency and that work be started on a new basin-wide treatment disposal system based on the anticipated increased waste load demands that will be made on the river during the coming years. In addition, the Committee recommended a variety of open space park and recreational programs along the banks of the river to preserve the environment. The Committee is continuing its in- vestigations to implement the report. MARYLAND ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST Chairman: John E. dark, 1971 Vice Chairman: Charles R. Anderson, 1972 Treasurer; Edward H.
