Kurland, M.D., Superintendent Catonsville (Baltimore County) 21228 Telephone: 747-4400 The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center was established by Chapter 558, Acts of 1967. It is located on the grounds of the Spring Grove State Hospital. Construction was begun in June 1967, and it was completed in 1968. The Center provides a program of basic and applied interdis- ciplinary research in mental illness and mental retardation. It also coordinates research activities at the various State mental hospitals, and offers training in research for graduate and post-graduate stu- dents in psychiatry and behavioral sciences (Code 1967, 1964 Repl. METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON RETARDATION CENTER Silver Spring 20904 Telephone: 937-2947 The Metropolitan Washington Retardation Center was established by Chapter 556, Acts of 1967. The hospital is planned to open in the early summer of 1970. It will have an initial bed capacity of 280 patients and is designed to provide educational services to non- ambulatory and partially ambulatory mentally retarded patients from the Metropolitan Washington area of the State. Later construction will provide a total capacity of 500 patients, including an extensive habilitation center (Code 1967, 1964 Repl. Vol., 1968 Supp., Art. 69, sec. 19). Caskey, Director, 1974 David N. Nurco, 1973; Addison W. Pope, M.D., 1972. The Drug Abuse Authority, created by Chapter 404, Acts of 1969, consists of three members appointed by the Governor with the advice of the Commissioner of the Department of Mental Hygiene and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate for four-year terms. The Governor designates one member of the Authority as its Director and he serves at the Governor's pleasure. The Authority is a part of the Department of Mental Hygiene. |
