Batterton Maryland Children's Center 5200 Westland Boulevard, Baltimore 21227 Telephone: 247-0011 By Chapter 98, Acts of 1956, the General Assembly authorized the construction of the Maryland Children's Center for the Department of Public Welfare. Children adjudged delinquent by the courts may be sent to the Center for not more than thirty days. The Center is to study each child and make recommendations to the courts regarding an appropriate treatment program. The Center has a capacity for 66 children (Code 1957, 1965 Supp., Art. 88A, sec. 39A). Thomas J. S. Waxter Children's Center has the same Superintendent and the same Advisory Board as the Maryland Children's Center. The Waxter Center has the same powers and responsibilities as the Maryland Children's Center. Initi- ally known as the Southern Maryland Children's Center, it was author- ized by Chapter 88, Acts of 1962. It received its present name by Chapter 131, Acts of 1963 (Code 1957, 1965 Supp., Art. 88A, sec. 39B). Appropriations 1965 1966 General Funds $609,437 $677,092 Staff: 76. When it was purchased by the State by Chapter 300, Acts of 1918, it adopted its present name. The school provides for the care and training of delinquent boys. During the fiscal year 1965 it provided care for 944 boys committed to the school and 238 who were detained there.
