GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION TO STUDY THE SHORTAGE OF
GENERAL PRACTITIONERS IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND

The Governor appointed this special commission in 1964 at the
request of the General Assembly to study and report on the problems
resulting from a shortage of general practitioners throughout the
State of Maryland. The Commission consisted of representatives of the
University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Maryland Academy
of General Practice, and two representing the general public. The
Commission reported to the Governor and the General Assembly in
1965 (J. R. No. 3, Acts of 1964).

The Governor appointed this special committee in 1964 to look at
the major activities of the State and the methods currently in use in
order to perform them. The Committee surveyed current data proc-
essing activities and made recommendations as to which functions not
now under data processing should be performed through the use of
this equipment. The Committee also looked at functions now per-
formed by data processing which could better be performed in other
ways, how the State could plan for its electronic data processing
activities, what forms such installations should take, where these
might be located, and the establishment of criteria to guide future
decisions as to whether or not an activity should be placed on data
processing equipment. The Committee consisted of officials of the
Mercantile Safe Deposit and Trust Company, the Monumental Life
Insurance Company, the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Com-
pany, the Martin-Marietta Corporation, and the Loyola Federal Sav-
ings and Loan Association. The Committee submitted its report to the
Governor on June 23, 1964.
