lished 1876; philosophy, arts and sciences, graduate studies, teacher
training, medicine, nursing, public health and hygiene, engineering
and international studies; male enrollment at the undergraduate
level; co-educational at the graduate level. 150 State scholarships
are granted at the College of Engineering (Code 1957, Art. 77,

HOOD COLLEGE, Frederick; Randle Elliott, President; established
1893; liberal arts, sciences, home economics; for women (Code
1957, Art. 77, sec. 263). Appropriations: 1961, $100,000; 1962,

MARYLAND INSTITUTE, Mt. Royal Avenue, Baltimore; Margaret
F. S. Glace, Director; established 1825 as the Maryland Institute
for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts; practical and fine arts
and design. 29 State scholarships (Code 1957, Art. 77, sec. 267).
Appropriations: 1961, $26,000; 1962, $25,000.

PEABODY INSTITUTE OF THE CITY OF BALTIMORE, I East
Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore 2; Herbert J. Watt, President;
established 1857 by the philanthropist George Peabody, who gave
over one million dollars to the Institute for the founding of a
library (opened, 1866) and a music conservatory (opened, 1868);
Conservatory of Music, Peter Mennin, Director; Library, Frank
N. Jones, Director. 36 State scholarships (Code 1957, Art. 77, sec.
264). Appropriations: 1961, $35,000; 1962, $35,000.

ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE, Annapolis; Richard D. Weigle, President;
established 1784; liberal arts; co-educational. 29 State scholar-
ships covering tuition, room, and board; 26 State scholarships cov-
ering tuition only (Code 1957, Art. 77, sees. 261-62). Appropria-
tions: 1961, $80,000; 1962, $80,000.

WASHINGTON COLLEGE, Chestertown; Daniel Z.Gibson, President;
established 1782; liberal arts, teacher preparation; co-educational.
State scholarships: 38 covering tuition, room and board, and text-
books; 29 covering tuition and textbooks (Code 1967, Art. 77, sees.
269-75). The Governor appoints 12 of the 37 trustees, one from
each of the counties on the Eastern Shore and three at large, for
terms of six years (Acts 1922, chap. 121). Clifton M. Miller, 1963;
