In 1947 the General Assembly authorized three Chronic Disease
Hospitals for patients who cannot obtain elsewhere the special facili-
ties needed for their care (Code 1957, Art. 43, sees. 599-603). These
hospitals are under the supervision of the Bureau of Medical Services
and Hospitals.

Montebello State Hospital

Montebello opened in 1953 as the principal unit of the Chronic
Disease Hospital System. Its principal emphasis is on rehabilitation.
Its bed capacity is 481.

Deer's Head. State Hospital
