SALISBURY STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The State Teachers College at Salisbury was established in 1925 as
a normal school offering a two-year preparation for elementary school
teachers. In 1931, the course was lengthened, to three years, and in
1934 it was extended to four years, leading to the degree of Bachelor
of Science. In addition the College offers a two-year junior college
program. Those students who are admitted to the teacher education
curriculum pay no tuition and must pledge themselves to teach in the
public schools of Maryland for two years following graduation. The
College enrollment for 1968-69 was 360.

TOWSON STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The State Teachers College at Towson, oldest and largest teacher-
education institution in the State, was established as the first State
normal school by the General Assembly of 1866. The school was orig-
inally located in Baltimore and moved to its suburban campus at
Towson in 1915. In 1935, it became a four-year teachers college with
a four-year program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science.
Graduates are prepared for teaching in kindergarten, elementary, or
junior high school. In 1958, the college started a program of graduate
studies leading to the degree of Master of Education. The college also
offers a two-year junior college course leading to the Associate in
Arts degree. Students enrolling in the four-year curriculum for pros-
pective teachers pay no tuition if they promise to teach in the public
schools of Maryland following their graduation. The enrollment of the
college for the school year 1968-69 was 1,369.
