STATE-AIDED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Colleges

THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, Homewood, Charles Street
at 34th Street, Baltimore 18; Lowell J. Reed, President; estab-
lished 1876; philosophy, arts and sciences, graduate studies,
teacher training, medicine, nursing, public health and hygiene,
engineering, and international studies. 150 State scholarships are
granted at the College of Engineering (Code 1951, Art. 77, sec.
271). Appropriations: 1953, $198,760; 1954, $198,750.

MARYLAND INSTITUTE, Mt. Royal Avenue, Baltimore; Margaret
F. Schaeffer Glace, Academic Dean; established 1948; practical
and fine arts and design. 29 State scholarships (Code 1961, Art.
77, sec. 267). Appropriations: 1968, $21,600; 1964, $21,600.

ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE, Annapolis; Richard D. Weigle, President;
established 1696; liberal arts, co-educational. 29 State scholar-
ships covering tuition, room and board and 26 State scholarships
covering tuition only are awarded (Code 1951, Art. 77, sees. 263,
264). Appropriations: 1963, $63,000; 1964, $76,000.

WASHINGTON COLLEGE, Chestertown: Daniel Z. Gibson, Presi-
dent; established 1782; liberal arts, teacher preparation, co-
educational. State scholarships: 36 covering tuition, room and
board, and textbooks, 26 covering tuition and textbooks and 60
covering tuition only are awarded (Code 1951, Art. 77, sees. 259-
266). The Governor appoints 12 of the twenty-five trustees, one
from each of the counties on the Eastern Shore and three at large
for terms of six years (Acts 1922, ch. 121). The gubernatorial
appointees are: John Dickinson, 1966; Jesse C. Smith, 1966; Ed-
ward D. E. Rollins, 1966; Robert L. Swain, 1966; William R.
Homey, 1967; John H. Hessey, 1957; Gustav C. Zucco, 1967;
Clifton M. Miller, 1967; Edward N. Evans, 1969; J. Millard
Tawes, 1969; George A. Bunting, 1969; Avery W. Hall, 1969.
Appropriations: 1953, $90,000; 1954, $96,000.

WESTERN MARYLAND COLLEGE, Westminster; Lowell Ensor,
President; established 1868; liberal arts and sciences, music and
teacher preparation; co-educational. 68 State scholarships cover-
ing tuition and board and 14 State scholarships covering tuition
only are awarded (Code 1961, Art. 77, sees. 266-266). Appropria-
tions: 1963, $84,260; 1964, $96,000.

Preparatory Schools

CHARLOTTE HALL SCHOOL, Charlotte Hall; M. D. Burgee, Prin-
cipal; established 1784; boys' preparatory, military, grades 6-12.
29 State scholarships covering tuition, room and board (Code
1951, Art. 77, sees. 266, 267). Appropriations: 1963, $27,660;
1964, $27,660.

McDONOGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS, McDonogh; Louis E. Lamborn,
Headmaster; established 1873; boys' preparatory, semi-military,
agricultural and mechanical arts. Appropriations: 1963, $1,000;
1954, $1,000.

WEST NOTTINGHAM ACADEMY, Colora; Charles W. Blaker,
Headmaster; established 1741; boys' preparatory, grades 7-12,
boarding. Appropriations: 1953, $1,000; 1964, $1,000.
