MARYLAND CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY

The Maryland Civil Defense Agency was established by the General
Assembly of 1949. The director of the agency is appointed by the
Governor upon the recommendation of the Adjutant General. The
agency is charged with the organization of a standby plan for the
handling of disasters resulting from enemy attack, sabotage, fire,
flood, earthquake, or other natural causes. The agency is also au-
thorized to cooperate with the Federal government, the governments
of other States, and local political subdivisions in organizing and
coordinating civil defense plans (Acts 1949, Ch. 563).
