City. Appointment is made by the Senator—after a competitive
examination held by the school—in each of the six legislative districts
and in each of the counties, except in Montgomery, Caroline, and
Prince George; in these three counties, appointment is made by the
County Board of Education and the County Superintendent of
Schools.
The present organization of St. Mary's Female Seminary is that of
the four year junior college: third and fourth years of high school and
first and second years of college—the period of general education.
Conduct of the school is that of the big family organization.
Chapter 877—Acts of 1941 provides for the abolishing of the Board
of Trustees then in existence, and the appointment of a Board by the
Governor. The said Board of Trustees to consist of twelve members,
and of those first appointed, four should serve for a term of two
years, four for a term of four years, and four for a term of six years.
At least six of the members first appointed to be selected from the
then existing Board of Trustees. In case of vacancy from death,
resignation or otherwise, the Governor shall appoint a person to fill
the unexpired term of the member causing said vacancy.

The College was chartered as the Centenary Biblical Institute on
November 27, 1867. In 1869 the first building was occupied at 44 E.
